Media Studies: Writing a script (Research and Planning)

Our group decided that based on our AS script from last year, we should give our current script a very similar layout as it was easy to read and understand. However we did also believe that our script writing lacked in some areas. Therefore this year we are going to do more research into how to write a script and create a basic layout based on what we find and then we can implement this into our current project.

8 steps to screenplaying a short...

First we looked at what we had. After researching how to write and writing our short story, we decided we were happy with the plot. We then advanced our storyline and filled in any errors and made it more realistic. We were happy with our storyline so wanted to research how to effectively screenplay. The first thing we found was that we needed to analyse existing screenplays and scripts of similar short films.

We looked into a short film script named "ERROR: 410" (just one we found online) to analyse it and see how it is set out. (script to the right).
It starts off the way most scripts do, which is by setting the scene. The way they set the scene in this script is quite short but straight to the point. This is something we need to do, head straight to the point of what you want to do in the scene. The dialogue is fairly straight forward and easy to understand but whilst looking online we found out that dialogue wasn't that important but that the most important part of a short film script is the visual aspect. This is because you don't have a lot of time to develop a character and as the saying goes, a picture tells a thousand words.

The next thing that we had to do was look at the resources we had and asked ourselves if it was doable or feasible. We don't have a budget in the film so nothing in the script can be expensive or unaccessible so we need to take it into account when writing the script. Although we have to have not a lot of dialogue but we still need character development so that can be put through the script and through the shots too. Show; don't tell. Films are a visual medium.
