There are many elements to consider when determining our target audience. This is because the target audience is one of the most important factors to consider when planning and producing our film as they will determine what we will show and what will be implied in the film. Without a specific target audience already decided before filming begins, the film would have random elements of other age ratings that wouldn't be appealing for certain age groups and therefore it is something that we must press on with.
The different audiences to consider would be:
Children - This would not be a good idea for our film as it will be too violent and inappropriate for this age group. They would be affected by our film so therefore their parents wouldn't be happy about them seeing our film. If we were to make these our target audience then we would have to scale down the amount of violence and this isn't something that we would be happy having to do. For this reason I don't believe that children would be the best audience for our film.
Teenagers - Teenagers would be a good idea to aim our film at because they are very open to new film ideas and they would therefore be a good audience. They are also old enough to not get scared by the film or be mentally damaged as could be the case with younger children. Their parents would also be happier with them seeing it. However, it would depend on the certificate of the film as if the film was a 15 or 18 then teenagers younger than that wouldn't be able to see it. It is for this reason that to aim our film at teenagers would be difficult and we wouldn't be able to guarantee whether they would be able to see the film or not.
Young Adults - Young Adults are one of the front runners for our target audience because they will enjoy the suspense that we plan to create in our film. They wouldn't be afraid by the film as they are old enough to handle it. They are also at an age where they want to be entertained and this is emoting that will do that more than other film genres. They also don't have the problem of not being able to get into the film because of the certificate as they are old above the age of 18 so therefore are above all age ratings. We think that these would be the best choice for our target audience.
Adults - Adults would have many of the same positives as the young adults because they are old enough to see the film and wouldn't be getting freaked out by the content of the film at all. However, one problem that could arise from this target audience is that mot all adults may find the film entertaining because it could have conventions that they believe to not be appropriate. But most should still find the film entertaining so therefore this could be a potential audience that we could exploit.
Senior Citizens/Elderly - This would probably not be the best idea for our target audience as they would most likely not find the film to be entertaining as it is probably for a younger generation than they are. They may find certain themes offensive as they may not be used to watching such films. However, there will undoubtedly be some who still enjoy the film and would watch it again. Although we do not feel like this will be our main target audience.
To conclude, we have decided that our short film will be targeted at more old teens or young adults from around 15 - 30. The reason for this is because our film is about young adults and there's a party scene therefore 15 - 30 year olds can relate to the storyline and become more connected.
